ABC had a bit of fun with viewers on April Fools’ Day by staging a surprise crossover between its two hit reality TV shows. When Sunday’s all-new episode of “American Idol” began, host Ryan Seacrest was nowhere to be found. Instead, “The Bachelor” host Chris Harrison introduced the episode as if it were the latest emotional installment of ABC’s dating series. Watch the clever April Fools’ Day gag above.
“Tonight, there will be drama,” Harrison began as he stared intently into the camera. “There will be tears. Who will stay? Who will go home broken-hearted? It’s all coming up on tonight’s ‘American Idol.'”
Seacrest then stepped out onto the stage holding a trademark rose from “The Bacehlor.” “I appreciate the effort,” Seacrest told Harrison, before trying to teach him how to say “This … is American Idol” with the elongated pause.
“I got this, I got this,” Harrison said. “This … is April Fools!”
Sunday night’s episode was the seventh to air on ABC after the alphabet net acquired it from Fox. This was the second of its famed “Hollywood Week” installments in which all of the contestants who made it through the initial auditions had to compete in various rounds at the Dolby Theatre. Judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie helped narrow the field from 169 singers down to the Top 50, based on their performances as solo artists and in groups.
The Top 24 singers of “American Idol” Season 16 will be revealed on Monday night’s episode. Which artists are YOU personally rooting for to make it the live shows, which are scheduled to begin Sunday, April 22? Let us know by sounding off down in the comments section.
