Maddie Poppe defied the odds and won season 16 of “American Idol” on Monday over frontrunner Gabby Barrett and Caleb Lee Hutchinson. As part of her prize, Poppe gets bragging rights to having the official winner’s single: “Going Going Gone.” The show released that track last Friday, as well as those by Barrett (“Rivers Deep”) and Hutchinson (“”Johnny Cash Heart”). Watch Poppe perform this new song just moments after Ryan Seacrest revealed that she had won on May 21 and then give it a grade in the poll below.
The tune was written by a trio of talented songsmiths: Mitch Allan, Lindy Robbins and Julia Michaels. Poppe introduced it on Sunday’s final and earned praise from the three judges. Her biggest champion, Katy Perry, said: “I think that song is one of the better songs of the three that guys you all have. I think you’re a real star.”
Luke Bryan also sang her praises: “That’s the most comfortable that we’ve seen out here thus far. Good job on that. I could relax watching you, so finally I can relax a little bit and take a breath. Way to come out here and deliver a solid performance.”
Concurred Lionel Richie: “To feel comfortable with a song for two weeks, that’s pretty hardcore. But you’re in the sales business now, I want you to understand this. You’re in the salesmanship business and I think you did a fabulous job. I agree with Luke: most comfortable so far, I will say that.”
