Noah Guthrie got his start as a singer on YouTube before landing a recurring role on the final season of “Glee.” When that show went off the air in 2015, his star faded but he was determined to prove that he was more than just a one-trick pony. He decided to swallow his pride and audition for “America’s Got Talent.” (Watch his audition video above.)
Rather than sing the sort of upbeat tune for which he became known, Guthrie opted for a slow, sultry take on the Rihanna hit “Love on the Brain.” Accompanying himself on the electric guitar, he delivered the kind of confident performance that had all four “AGT” judges on their feet at the end.
Mel B said simply, “You killed it brother.” Heidi Klum admitted she was equally impressed by his humble manner and sexy voice. Howie Mandel dubbed him unique and praised his wonderful way with a song. And head judge Simon Cowell capped off the lovefest by telling Guthrie that “this is your time.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty observed, “Guthrie is on ‘AGT’ now looking for another chance at building a lasting singing career. Tonight he played his guitar to a bluesy, earthy take on “Love on the Brain.” All four judges stood with the audience to congratulate him on a successful audition. Overall it was an easy four for four from the panel so he’s moving on as well.”
