Los Angeles-based choir Angel City Chorale made its mark on the “America’s Got Talent” 2018 live shows Tuesday night with a rousing rendition of “This Is Me” from “The Greatest Showman.” Led by director Sue Fink, this 150-person choir is notable for its inclusion and diversity and this time they stepped things up by engaging with the Dolby Theatre audience. All four “AGT” judges — Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel — were on their feet at the conclusion of Angel City Chorale’s act. Howie: “I’m feeling great. Here’s my worry. I do have a worry because America, you gotta vote. The problem with America right now is, you know, we were totally surrounded in this room, in this audience. The music just went right through you. People at home are watching it on TV and maybe some of them don’t have great speakers but I’m here to tell you, it’s amazing! Trust me.”
Mel: “You know what I like about you guys? You’re not perfect. But what you are is feel good. You make me feel good, you make the whole room smile and you’re very uplifting. Now who does the choreography? I like your choreography, but it’s a bit cheesy. I like cheesy.”
Heidi: “No, it’s not cheesy. Your sound is so powerful, all 150 of you. I think you are united, all of you are super united. It doesn’t matter what belief you are, it doesn’t matter what race you are, it doesn’t matter how old you are, and I think we all learned something from you guys. Well done! It’s not cheesy.”
Simon: “I’ll make this quick. If I had died during this performance and this is heaven, I’m happy ’cause that’s what it felt like. It was amazing.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty wrote, “The singers of Angel City Chorale took the stage next for their follow-up to their golden buzzer earning performance in the Judge Cut round with a soulful rendition of ‘This Is Me.’ What’s great about them as a choir is that they don’t rely solely on their voices to entertain, but instead include synchronized movements and other sounds to engage the audience in other ways. We already know that the group is one of Simon’s personal favorites, but tonight the entire panel of judges was on their feet for a standing ovation. Howie is worried that the choir’s impact might not be fully felt through the television and Mel called them ‘not perfect, but feel good’ which seems like a backhanded compliment! Needless to say the audience booed the heck out of her!”
