Ariana Grande has released her first new song in two years. “No Tears Left to Cry” premiered on April 19 along with a futuristic, visual effects-driven new music video directed by Dave Meyers, who won Grammys for directing Missy Elliott‘s “Lose Control” (2006) and Kendrick Lamar‘s “Humble” (2018). “No Tears Left to Cry” is the lead single from Grande’s upcoming fourth studio album. Her last album, “Dangerous Woman,” was released in 2016 and produced two top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart: the title track and then “Side to Side” featuring Nicki Minaj. Then in 2017 she released two cover songs: “Beauty and the Beast,” a duet with John Legend for the live-action Disney remake of the classic animated musical, and then “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” for the “One Love Manchester” benefit concert that was held after 22 people were killed in a bombing while leaving a Grande concert in the UK in May 2017.
But the new song is upbeat, perhaps in defiance of that terrorist attack. She sings, “Right now I’m in a state of mind / I wanna be in like all the time / Ain’t got no tears left to cry / So I’m pickin’ it up / I’m lovin’, I’m livin’, I’m pickin’ it up.” “No Tears” was written by Grande with Ilya Salmanzadeh, Savan Kotecha and ubiquitous hit-maker Max Martin, writer of 22 number-one hits from Britney Spears‘s “Baby One More Time” all the way to Justin Timberlake‘s “Can’t Stop the Feeling.”
