Monday night during Night 3 of “The Voice” Season 15, improv comedian Steve Memmolo, a self-described Ben Affleck lookalike, took on Classics IV‘s “Spooky” and caused two coaches to turn their chairs around: Adam Levine and Jennifer Hudson. At first the coaches admitted they were surprised by Steve’s looks, but then they started battling each other to get him on their team. In the end, Steve decided to join Adam’s team. Watch NBC’s “The Voice” blind audition video above and read the coaches’ comments below.
Adam’s first comment was that Steve would be “if Ben Affleck could sing like Aretha Franklin.” When Steve responded that he gets that a lot, Adam said, “I mean, you look actually kind of a lot like Ben Affleck. But you know what, Steve? At this point I feel like I’ve seen it all and every once in a while a Steve happens. When I turned, I saw Jennifer [turning]. I was like, ‘Man, she’s gonna do this and it’s gonna bother me.’ You’re really special, dude. And I love that song, too.”
Jennifer added, “What attracted me was your vocal approach. It’s dope and amazing. And I turn around and I see Steve and I want him on my team. I sure do!” Despite Jennifer trying to fight for Steve’s “soul” and “groove,” he ended up becoming the newest member of Team Adam.
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “Improv comedian and wedding bang member Steve Memmolo from Boston was up next. He used his 90 seconds to sing Classic IV‘s ‘Spooky,’ but the performance left the coaches panel bewildered until the last stretch when Adam and Jennifer each went all-in for it. Adam admitted that when he hit his buzzer he knew that Jennifer would eventually, but he wanted a crack at Steve as well. The two of them were in agreement that Steve had a bit of Michael Jackson in his voice, but maybe it was Adam’s passion for him that won Steve over and perhaps a bit of destiny because Steve always envisioned joining Adam’s team in his head.”
