Best Costume Design Oscar predictions: ‘Phantom Thread,’ ‘Beauty and the Beast’ lead at 2018 Academy Awards

Four of our five predicted Oscar nominees for Best Costume Design reaped bids for the Costume Designers Guild kudos. While these awards often overlook one of the Academy Awards nominees, the guild has a stellar track record at honoring the eventual Oscar winner. Among the leading CDG contenders is our Oscar frontrunnerPhantom Thread.”

It vies in the period costume category at the guild awards as do our third-ranked “The Greatest Showman” and fifth-place contender “The Shape of Water.” Our fourth-ranked Oscar contender, “Darkest Hour,” was snubbed in this category. The second-ranked Oscar contender, “Beauty and the Beast,” is one of the five fantasy film nominees at the CDG Awards.

Our official Oscar odds are derived from the predictions of Expert film journalists, the Gold Derby Editors who cover awards year-round, the Top 24 Users who got the top scores predicting last year’s Oscar nominations, the All-Star Top 24 who got the top scores when you combine the last two years’ nominations and the thousands of Users who make up the largest (and often savviest) bloc.

All but three of our 25 experts favor “Phantom Thread” for the win as do six of the eight editors. It also has the backing of 16 of both the Top 24 and 15 All-Stars. “Beauty and the Beast” is the choice of those other three experts, two editors and seven of both the two dozen users who did the best last year and those who were tops for two years running.
