The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild gave a big boost to “Darkest Hour,” the Oscar frontrunner for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. It nominated this WWII drama, in which Gary Oldman is transformed into Winston Churchill, for three awards: both period/character hairstyling and makeup as well as special makeup effects. Its closest Oscar rival, “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2,” is up for contemporary hairstyling and special makeup effects. And our third-place Oscar contender “Wonder” view for three prizes: contemporary hairstyling and makeup as well as special makeup effects.
Our official Oscar odds are derived from the predictions of Expert film journalists, the Gold Derby Editors who cover awards year-round, the Top 24 Users who got the top scores predicting last year’s Oscar nominations, the All-Star Top 24 who got the top scores when you combine the last two years’ nominations and the thousands of Users who make up the largest (and often savviest) bloc.
BEST MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING
“Darkest Hour” – 10/11
“Wonder” – 5/1
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” – 13/2
All but two of our 25 experts favor “Darkest Hour,” Likewise with all but one of the eight editors, 22 of the Top 24 and 23 All-Stars. One pro pundit is predicting an upset by “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” as is one of our editors and two of the Top 24. And another expert thinks “Wonder” will win as does one All-Star.
