On Jan. 10, the Cinema Audio Society Awards confirmed the status of “Dunkirk” as the Oscar frontrunner for Best Sound Mixing. But while Christopher Nolan‘s WWII epic reaped a bid for this precursor prize, its closest Oscar rival — “Blade Runner 2049” — was snubbed by the sound mixers guild. That slight has dimmed its hopes of pulling off an upset at the Oscars.
We are predicting that these two films will be joined at the Oscars by three of the other four films nominated by the CAS: “Baby Driver,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “The Shape of Water.” While “Wonder Woman” sounded good to the guild, we don’t expect it to win over the members of the sound branch.
Our official Oscar odds are derived from the predictions of Expert film journalists, the Gold Derby Editors who cover awards year-round, the Top 24 Users who got the top scores predicting last year’s Oscar nominations, the All-Star Top 24 who got the top scores when you combine the last two years’ nominations and the thousands of Users who make up the largest (and often savviest) bloc.
BEST SOUND MIXING
“Dunkirk” – 17/10
“Blade Runner 2049” – 9/2
“The Shape of Water” – 6/1
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” – 15/2
“Baby Driver” – 10/1
The experts strongly favor “Dunkirk” for the win with 20 out of 25 backing its bid. Likewise for seven of the eight editors, 21 of the Top 24 and 22 All-Stars. Five of our pro pundits are predicting an upset by “Blade Runner 2049” as are two of both the two dozen users who did the best last year and those who were tops for two years running.
