Chandler Massey (“Days of Our Lives”) will win the Daytime Emmy for Best Supporting Actor according to our official predictions, which place him out front with leading odds of 4/5. Winners will be announced on Sunday night, April 29, after being decided by blue ribbon panels that watched sample performance reels. Gold Derby contributor Tony Ruiz and I watched all the submissions and agree that Massey is out front, but he’s not a slam dunk by any means. He faces tough competition. Watch our predictions slugfest above.
“Chandler Massey knows how to submit, clearly. He’s won three out of four times [for Best Younger Actor] and could easily go four-out-of-five,” says Ruiz about Massey’s performance as his character struggles with amnesia and assault. “There’s a lot of emotional range. I think the scene with the strangling … he’s spectacular in that scene, the kind of explosive anger than Emmy voters love.” I agree with Ruiz, though the rest of Massey’s reel is much subtler and opens the door for another explosive performance to win.
Our forum posters also watched the acting submissions, and though many of them agree Massey is the man to beat, other say his “Days” co-star Greg Vaughan will prevail for an “unbelievably good” reel full of “passion and emotion.” Vaughan currently ranks second in our predictions with odds of 7/2, so don’t count him out. And we might also be underestimating Wally Kurth (“General Hospital”) and Anthony Montgomery (also “GH”), who submitted impactful reels of their own. Read some of our posters’ comments on the Best Supporting Actor race below, and join the discussion here in our forums.
Berlin2002: “Great submission topped off with a superlative performance by Chandler. Four scenes with a great acting arc … Massey’s scene with his mother Sami is his Emmy. It’s a stunner.”
FreemanGriffin: “[Massey has] great variety in his performances, terrific work with his co-stars, chemistry with everyone, great story arc, especially his work with Deidre Hall … just phenomenal! This is an Emmy-winning reel!”
Ardejah Cat Harbin: “[Vaughan’s] tape made me cry. You can feel Eric’s pain. All he wanted was for Nicole to love him back as he loved her. He had incredible range … This tape was phenomenal acting. I enjoyed every moment.”
Scoopster: “Greg Vaughan’s reel was unbelievably good. Those scenes with Arianne Zucker were heartbreaking. Chandler Massey was excellent, but no way does he win over Vaughan’s tape.”
OLTLfan: “I watched Vaughn’s reel last and it gave me all the passion and emotion I was missing in the other reels. This is clearly the strongest performance here. He’s just fantastic.”
