‘Big Brother’ 20 episode 5 recap: Did Steve Arienta or Sam Bledsoe get booted during first live eviction? [UPDATING LIVE BLOG]

After two weeks of bickering, backstabbing and bitching, the first player was voted out of the “Big Brother” Season 20 house on Thursday night. The two players up for eviction were Steve Arienta and Sam Bledsoe, who were nominated by Tyler Crispen after he won the season’s first Head of Household competition. Did the dominating FOUTTE and Level 6 alliances unite to send home either Steve or Sam (who’s currently serving half of her time as a robot), or was there a rift in the house?

9:00 p.m. – “Previously, on ‘Big Brother’!” On Wednesday’s fourth episode Faysal Shafaat won the Veto competition and chose not to save either Steve or Sam. His decision inadvertently protected a teary-eyed Bayleigh Dayton from being put up as a replacement nomination. With the house seemingly divided between the FOUTTE group and the Level 6’ers, there’s no telling how tonight’s vote will play out. Let’s get this thing started!

9:10 p.m.Julie Chen reveals that if Sam is evicted, she will have to win a live challenge to return to the game. We kind of already knew that, but it was a nice confirmation. Meanwhile, back in the house Sam plans to campaign to stay so she won’t have to use her special power just yet. Tyler is on board with saving Sam and hopes to reel her into the Level 6 alliance. On the other side of the house, Kaitlyn Herman, Swaggy C Williams and Faysal have convinced Steve he’s safe. And they actually believe it!

9:15 p.m. – A love triangle could be brewing! Both Haleigh Broucher and Kaitlyn have developed a crush on Faysal, but he is definitely more into Haleigh. Kaitlyn begins to notice Haleigh and Faysal hanging out more and seems to be getting a little jealous. Drama could be brewing! Up in the HOH room, the Level 6 alliance is discussing how they can evict Steve without revealing their alliance. They need to pull in one more vote to execute their plan and Winston Hines is convinced they could bring Kaitlyn to their side. Will they succeed or expose their plan by telling her?

9:20 p.m. – Things quickly progress from light flirtation to a full on make-out session between Faysal and Haleigh in the bedroom. Of all people, Kaitlyn happens to walk in and pretends to be upset that she will have to deal with another showmance in the house. But she soon erupts into tears and goes into a full-on meltdown. What else could she do but run and hop into Tyler’s bed? So that’s what she did. Now Kaitlyn is convinced she has to save Sam since everyone else is pairing up and she’s left without a partner. This plays right into Level 6’s hands and Tyler is thrilled!

9:30 p.m. – It is time for the live vote and eviction! Voting for Sam are: Scottie Salton, Swaggy C, Bayleigh, Faysal, Haleigh and Rockstar. Voting to evict Steve are: JC Mounduix, Rachel Swindler, Kaycee Clark, Angela Rummans, Brett Robinson, Winston and Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn jumped ship and joined the other side of the house! By a vote of 7-6, Steve has been evicted. Swaggy’s jaw is on the floor! Sad for Steve, but hilarious to see Swaggy’s game blow up.

9:45 p.m. – Random thoughts: This could end up being a highly competitive season. Unlike some years when one alliance seems to have a majority of the dominant players, these two groups both seem to have multiple competition beasts. That should make for more drama and more fun. Also, Sam needs her own animated series. She’s a voice-over dream!

9:55 p.m. – It’s time for the HOH competition! As the outgoing Head of Household, Tyler is not allowed to play. In “Land a Job,” players must launch a ball into the fictional city of San BROse’. Each building is a tech company with a listed salary attached. The player earning the most money will win HOH. The order of elimination was JC, Brett, Winston, Scottie, Kaycee, Faysal, Sam, Angela, Bayleigh, Swaggy, Rockstar, Haleigh and Rachel. Kaitlyn is the new HOH! It’s a big night for Kaitlyn. She just back-stabbed the FOUTTE alliance and now she may have to nominate two of them later this week!

9:59: Closing out the show Julie announced Sam the Robot and Kaycee’s Pinwheel of Doom are officially dead. Tune in Sunday to see what drama unfolds now that Kaitlyn is the new HOH!
