Drake is number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for the ninth week in a row with “God’s Plan.” But as that song gradually wanes another song is on the rise: “Meant to Be” by Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line, which reaches a new milestone with its ascent to the number-two spot. And two rappers hit the top 10 for the first time in their careers: XXXTentacion and Lil Dicky.
“God’s Plan” continues to be a dominant force, especially in online streams where it now accounts for 9 of the top 14 streaming weeks of all time. But it has lost some ground in that area — still number-one, but down to 68.5 million streams for the week, its lowest to date — and it’s down one spot to number-two in digital sales. Could that open the door for Rexha and Florida Georgia Line in the coming weeks?
“Meant to Be’s” rise to number-two makes history as a new all-time high for both Rexha and Florida Georgia Line, and it’s the highest mark for any country duo or group since Lady Antebellum‘s crossover smash hit “Need You Now” peaked at number-two in 2010. “Need You Now” ended up winning Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the Grammys and Academy of Country Music Awards, and Single of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards. Could “Meant to Be” match that awards success just as it has matched that chart success?
Elsewhere in the top 10 XXXTentacion jumps up 12 places into the number-seven slot with “Sad!” from his album “?” which also debuts on top of the Billboard 200 albums chart this week. But meanwhile the 20-year-old has been in legal trouble, facing 15 felony charges for domestic abuse.
Coming in at number-nine is an artist with a similarly checkered past: Chris Brown debuts as a featured artist on Lil Dicky’s comic song “Freaky Friday” in which the two artists switch bodies for a day. In 2009 Brown pleaded guilty to felony charges for his assault on fellow singer and then-girlfriend Rihanna.
