Blake Shelton made Colton Smith‘s dream come true during Monday’s Night 7 episode of “The Voice” Season 15. After Jennifer Hudson pitted Colton against Patrique Fortson in a battle to the song “God Gave Me You” by Blake himself, Jennifer made the agonizing decision to cut Colton from her team and keep Patrique. But Blake wasn’t quite ready to see Colton leave the stage. Watch NBC’s “The Voice” battle round video above and read the coaches’ comments below.
Just as Colton was walking off the stage and heading for the door, Blake surprised everyone by hitting his “steal” button. “It is my record and I know what level you took it to, which I could never do,” Blake told Colton about why he saved him. “From one vocalist to another, what you did right there, man? Respect. You deserve to be here.”
Backstage Colton was all smiles as he said that he was “shook to the core” with Blake’s decision. Earlier when Blake critiqued both performances he seemed to favor Colton slightly over Patrique, telling him, “Colton, I’m really surprised. You blew me away, man. I mean, that’s incredible.” He then joked, “And Patrique, I can’t get over how much you sound like me. It’s unbelievable.”
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the battle: “Both Colton and Patrique displayed their stage presence, feeding off of the passionate energy of one another. Patrique’s vocal was in a very high range with some impressive runs while Colton stayed in his lower register, balancing Patrique out nicely. In her critique, Kelly gave the edge to Patrique, but Adam really liked Colton despite noticing some nerves on his end. Faced with the decision, Jennifer went with Patrique, the artist she says knows his voice well and has more bells and whistles to work with.”
