Caleb Lee Hutchinson (‘Midnight Train to Memphis’): ‘American Idol’ country singer appears ‘so nervous,’ says Katy Perry [WATCH]

Sunday night during the Top 14 performance episode of “American Idol,” 18-year-old Caleb Lee Hutchinson sang The Steeldrivers‘ “Midnight Train to Memphis” for judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. This Dallas, Georgia resident appeared nervous on stage, but still had the girls screaming in the audience. Was Caleb’s performance good enough to send him through to the Top 10 of Season 16? Watch the “American Idol” video above and then read the judges’ comments below.

“I think that you can’t believe that you’re here,” critiqued Katy. “I think it was overwhelming. I think you were so nervous that it maybe painted some of your performance. I believe in you because, man, you believe in yourself so much, obviously.”

Luke chimed in, “Caleb, the fact that you have grown so much and you’ve been motivated by this whole music business, it’s so inspiring. Great job on the song. I’m not crazy excited about the song choice but man, I love you, dude, good job.”

“So let me give you a little big of advice. I know exactly what’s happening,” admitted Lionel. “The girls started screaming and you forgot all about the song. The confidence is there and believe it or not, I’ve seen you take off now to this point. Remember one thing, okay? We want you to grow into being you. Just give us more of you.”

In his “American Idol” live blog recap, Denton Davidson wrote, “With a banjo in hand, Caleb is taking full ownership of his country roots and I can only imagine he will be rewarded for it. He sounds fantastic, looks better than ever on stage. Do we have a new heartthrob in the making? I love the way he seems to be enjoying the crowd and he hasn’t missed a note. Overall, a winning performance for Caleb. Send him through to the Top 10!”
