2018 Daytime Emmy predictions for Best Supporting Actress: ‘Too close to call’ between the women of ‘Y&R’ [WATCH]

There are six women nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 2018 Daytime Emmys, but if you’re having trouble narrowing it down, don’t worry. We’re pretty sure the award will go to a woman from “The Young and the Restless.” Unfortunately for us prognosticators, though, there are four women nominated for “Y&R,” so that doesn’t narrow it down much. Gold Derby contributor Tony Ruiz and I viewed the performance reels that determined the nominees and the winners. Watch our spirited debate above.

I’m predicting Marla Adams for her touching, wide-ranging performance as “Y&R” matriarch Dina Mergeron in scenes dealing with her fractured relationship with her daughter Ashley (Best Actress nominee Eileen Davidson) and the onset of her Alzheimer’s disease. But Ruiz is betting on fellow “Y&R” star Camryn Grimes for playing Mariah as she struggles with falling in love with another woman. “I watched this reel and it just broke my heart,” says Ruiz, who adds that “these types of performances tend to win,” noting the coming-out scenes that won prizes for younger actors Chandler Massey (“Days of Our Lives”) and Lexi Ainsworth (“General Hospital”) in recent years.

But Ruiz and I were also impressed by the performances given by the other two “Y&R” nominees: Mishael Morgan and Elizabeth Hendrickson. Our forum posters have watched the reels too, and they’re as torn over the category as we are, saying it’s “too close to call” and “a real tough category.” Read some of their comments below, and join the discussion taking place in our forums.

OLTLfan: “This one’s too close to call … Grimes has an absolutely beautifully written reel and is just so present and emotionally available throughout. Just a fantastic performance. While I wouldn’t be shocked to see any of the ‘Y&R’ ladies take it, she would be my personal choice.”

JONNYSBRO: “This is a real tough category because I loved three of the reels … Grimes gave a layered, heartfelt and complex performance. Grimes deserves Emmy gold.”

Berlin2002: “Elizabeth Hendrickson, Marla Adams and new girl on the block (I’d never seen her work before) Mishael Morgen all friggin’ killed in their submissions … [but] Camryn Grimes — DROP. THE. MIC. Emmy.”

gatorman: “Honestly, I could see any of the ‘Y&R’ ladies winning, and my wish is to see Grimes and Morgan tie for the win.”

EmmyLoser: “Both [Grimes and Adams] are truly excellent throughout their reels without letting up. Grimes’s reel is really heavy on emotion, with Mariah doing or having done a lot of soul-searching and at points pouring her heart out to Sharon and to Tessa … In terms of her performance, Adams does deliver on everything, and plays quite a range of emotions and personalities even.”
