Catie Turner (‘Take Me to Church’): Quirky ‘American Idol’ singer addresses haters — ‘Some people are mean’ [WATCH]

Sunday night during the Top 14 performance episode of “American Idol,” 17-year-old Catie Turner sang Hozier‘s “Take Me to Church” for judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. This Langhorne, Pennsylvania high school student revealed that she’s been getting hate mail from fans, shrugging, “Some people are mean.” Was Catie’s performance good enough to send her through to the Top 10 of Season 16? Watch the “American Idol” video above and then read the judges’ comments below.

“Whatever happens, I would like to personally sing with you,” announced Katy. “I don’t know what that looks like in the future. But I think you are exactly as you should be. I personally know what it feels like to read the comments or to look at the Googles and not feel good, especially if there’s nine great ones and one bad one. My advice continually is don’t scroll down on the comments. You keep giving these haters a job, and they don’t deserve one.”

“I told you don’t read stuff online,” warned Luke. “Remember that? And you went and did it! Listen, you can win this thing, by the way.”

Lionel agreed, saying, “Listen to what the man’s saying. I am telling you, what I love most about you is that you are truly authentic unto yourself. I’m telling you, there’s nothing else like you. Take that, love it, okay? You’re on your way to something, my dear.”

In his “American Idol” live blog recap, Denton Davidson noted, “I like this song choice for her but she doesn’t exactly look comfortable on stage. Katy’s face in the audience is screaming, ‘Aww, bless your heart.’ But the judges were on their feet by the end! It was a solid performance but I don’t think I loved it as much as Luke and Katy appeared to.”
