Chelsea Hough and Evan DeBenedetto needed a chemistry lesson on “So You Think You Can Dance.” They were getting on like a house on fire during their rehearsals, but for some reason it wasn’t coming through to the judges during their live performances. But they finally found their connection in week two of the live shows when they performed a contemporary routine choreographed by Travis Wall. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late for both of them.
Hough and DeBenedetto landed in the bottom four along with Cole Mills and Magda Fialek when the results of America’s votes were revealed at the end of the show. But even though the judges were impressed by their final number, it wasn’t enough. They decided to spare Mills and Fialek from elimination and send Hough and DeBenedetto home instead. Twitch: “That was one of the best times that I’ve seen you emotionally connect to a piece in this competition. That was beautifully done. Travis, that was amazing man. And whatever that feeling was … This is the connection that we’re talking about, that we keep harping about. So just stay in that lane whatever that is.”
Mary Murphy: “Listen to me, you guys. If you want to be on Broadway, you’re going to be on Broadway. You have the power to make that happen. You’re both super talented. And I’ve been all over you about your chemistry together, and you just found it together in this piece. It was beautiful, and it was strong.”
Nigel Lythgoe: “Travis has brought you both together and got this out of you, and I’m so happy that you got to work with him … I love the idea behind this routine: don’t stay in any situation where you’re uncomfortable, have the courage to break away from it. And I think both of you have found the courage to be with each other, so congratulations.”
Vanessa Hudgens: “Travis Wall is so good at bringing such beautiful choreography, and I think you guys did a fantastic job, created some really beautiful lines. Chelsea, your extensions were beautiful, gorgeous shapes you guys created. It was by far the most connected I’ve seen the two of you. I didn’t feel personally as much as I wanted to, but that’s just me. Who am I to say that? They all felt it, so that’s amazing. Great job.”
