Adult singer Christina Wells returned to “America’s Got Talent” 2018 this week to perform live from the Dolby Theatre in the Quarterfinals 3 episode. This time around Christina, who’s struggled with weight issues throughout her life, took on “I Am Changing” from “Dreamgirls.” Was this rendition enough to send her through to next week’s Semifinals? Watch the “Americas Got Talent” performance video above, read the judges’ comments below, and make your predictions for which seven acts will advance to the Semifinals.
Howie: “Oh my God. I can’t believe there’s gonna be more show tonight. That was like a grand finale. That’s the way to leave them. You know, you said in the package before that you didn’t believe in yourself and sometimes it was only your mother that believed in you. After that, and I think I speak for the entire country, I think we all believe in you now.”
Mel: “Where do I start? My gosh. I adore you. I love you. Your voice is sensational. Your range is just massive. You are incredible. You make me cry. I was right there with you. I’ve never heard that song before, but I understand every single lyric because you sang it from your heart. You can sing.”
Heidi: “You definitely have changed so much since the first time we met. And that is not your voice, because your voice has always been there. But your confidence needed to catch up, and it finally did.”
Simon: “Tonight, Christina, you are the diva I’ve always believed that you were, and I mean that as the biggest compliment. You absolutely owned the stage, you owned the song. Anyone who’s ever put you down, which we spoke about before, after that well they can you know what. Because that’s what this show is all about. It’s people like you being given an opportunity. I think there’s gonna be a lot of Broadway producers watching this show tonight thinking, ‘I want to audition you.'”
In his “AGT” live blog our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “Singer Christina Wells served up a gutsy rendition of ‘I Am Changing,’ a bold choice simply for the amount of power it takes to pull it off. It was well worth the risk though–she gave everything she had inside and delivered a deeply passionate performance. And I have to say, I love that she chose that song from ‘Dreamgirls’ rather than the more typical choice of ‘And I Am Telling You.’ Both the studio audience and the panel were on board with her choice with Heidi acknowledging that she finally found her confidence and Simon lovingly referring to her as a true diva.”
