“You’re like Harry Potter without the glasses, aren’t you?” asked “America’s Got Talent” judge Simon Cowell after close-up magician Shin Lim performed Tuesday night during the first live show of 2018. Shin’s latest card trick involved transforming a normal deck of cards into different things, including words that spelled “I love Americas Got Talent.” The other three “AGT” judges — Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel — also enjoyed the magic act, but did Shin do enough to advance to the next round? Howie: “You know, I can’t give a better compliment than this but I’ve said by leaps and bounds the best close-up magic I’ve ever seen. As a germaphobe I mean this in the best way: it is so clean and seamless. No, it is. I’m looking and I’m right there. You are wow. People have to vote. If you’re not in the finals then America doesn’t know what they’re doing.”
Mel: “I just love the whole performance. And what you do with your hands — whoa, amazing. You need to ensure your hands for at least $5 million per hand, because what you do is amazing and fantastic. You do it so smoothly.”
Heidi: “I mean, I agree with Howie. You definitely are the best close-up magician I’ve ever seen. First they are normal cards, then it says ‘I love America,’ then ‘I love America’s Got Talent,’ then they’re in the box, out of the box, then they’re gone.”
Simon: “You’re like Harry Potter without the glasses, aren’t you? I mean, genuinely. The only thing I would say is, I think moving forward we have to move away from the cards and do what Jon Dorenbos does. We need more of a performance.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty declared, “One of the few magicians left in the competition is Shin Lim, who feels that even without the daring antics of some of the other acts has what it takes to deserve a spot in the finals. Tonight his trick was one continuous flow of a deck of cards disappearing and reappearing, changing into a different deck that (cue eyeroll) spelled out ‘Vote For Shin Lim America’s Got Talent,’ and then even smoking at one point. Howie and Heidi both call Shin the best close-up magician they’ve ever seen, recognizing that his tricks are so clean and smooth. Simon’s only criticism is that he needs to move away from the cards and provide more of a performance next time.”
