‘Dancing with the Stars’: Love was in the air for Alexis and Alan on Halloween, but could their showmance backfire? [WATCH]

Alexis Ren is smitten. During Disney Night on “Dancing with the Stars” she hinted that she might have a crush on her pro partner Alan Bersten, and on Halloween Night she went all-in, confessing, “I’m developing feelings for Alan, and I didn’t see this one coming.” She added that “we communicate … with our hearts,” and Bersten seemed to reciprocate those feelings but “I want to be 100-percent certain before I tell her how I’m feeling.” Well, it’s a good thing he kept those feelings to himself then and didn’t broadcast them to a national audience in a carefully produced clip package.

Fans of reality TV know to take the “reality” part with a grain of salt, and the romance between Ren and Bersten seemed to spring up quite suddenly on Disney Night. So is this showmance just for show? That hasn’t always been the case; season 20 contestant Robert Herjavec (“Shark Tank”) struck up a real romance with his pro partner Kym Johnson, and they ended up marrying the following year. But savvy TV watchers may be skeptical; indeed, Gold Derby contributor Cordell Martin watched Ren and Bersten’s clip package and commented, “Is this an episode of ‘The Bachelor’?”

So there’s a possibility that the showmance could backfire with incredulous viewers, but at least the judges still have their backs. They performed a sweet (literally) jazz routine to “Candyman” by Christina Aguilera (watch it above), and Len Goodman thought it was “dandy.” Bruno Tonioli called it a “Halloween treat.” And Carrie Ann Inaba told Ren that she “lights up” the room. They gave her straight 9s for a total of 27 out of 30, but on a highly competitive night that was only good enough for fourth place on the leaderboard.

Since she’s in the middle of the pack she’ll still need fan support to keep her safe, so hopefully her love connection with her partner will endear her to the viewing audience and not overshadow her accomplishments on the dance floor.
