Baseball player and former “Dancing with the Stars” finalist David Ross will be a guest judge in tonight’s semifinals, but you’d think it was Thanos since half of the remaining contestants will be wiped out by the end of the night. So who will survive the semifinals bloodbath in this all-athletes edition of “DWTS”? Follow along with our live blog for the semifinals here.
Every week we poll our users for their “DWTS” predictions, and as of this writing it looks like softball player Jennie Finch Daigle is the likeliest to exit: she gets leading odds of 1/2. Last week she tied Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the lowest-scoring individual dance of the night, though her team routine with Adam Rippon, Mirai Nagasu and Arike Ogunbowale boosted her overall score. She survived that evening’s elimination, but it might be difficult for her to survive a triple elimination to make the finals.
Ranked second in our elimination predictions with 5/1 odds is figure skater Tonya Harding. The controversial athlete has received consistent scores for her individual routines, but her lower-scoring team dance with Abdul-Jabbar, Chris Mazdzer and Josh Norman left her in the middle of the pack on the judges’ leaderboard. And if viewers are ambivalent about supporting her due to her disputed involvement in the 1994 assault on Nancy Kerrigan, she might not get the votes she needs to reach the finals.
But there will be one more elimination, so if we’re right about Finch Daigle and Harding going home, who will be the last to join them? Currently it looks like that will be Olympic luger Mazdzer, who ranks third with 11/1 odds of elimination. He has been a solid dancer with a charming personality thus far, but you might need to be damn near perfect to survive with half of the cast getting the boot.
So based on our predictions that leaves Rippon, Nagasu and Norman with likely spots in the season finale on May 21. Two figure skaters and a football player — in “DWTS” history those two sports have accounted for six Mirror Ball Trophy victories, so it may be a fitting way to end “DWTS: Athletes.”
