It took them long enough! I’ve had a bone to pick with the “Dancing with the Stars: Juniors” judges this season for holding out on “Black-ish” star Miles Brown. It took him seven weeks of competition to get even a single 10 even though he is, for my money, the most technically gifted celeb of the season, and with the most showmanship too. Well, the judges finally gave Brown his due during the Semi-Finals; when he teamed up with Mackenzie Ziegler for dance duos in the second half of the night, they were showered with 10s. Watch their performance above.
The judges opened the floodgates throughout the Semi-Finals. I thought it was curious how enthusiastic they were when they had been so conservative before. If you combined the first seven weeks of the season, the judges gave out a total of four 10s. But during the Semi-Finals alone they took out their 10 paddles 11 times! Three of those were for Ziegler’s round-one paso doble. One of them was for Brown’s round-one cha cha. And three more were for Ziegler and Brown’s duo routine, which was a fusion of samba and jazz.
Their duo dance didn’t only get a perfect score, it earned them their most effusive praise. Val Chmerkovskiy called it “easily the best performance of the season … simply awesome.” And Mandy Moore said, “I have been waiting for that routine all season long … incredible.”
I was in full agreement with the judges, and I might even go a bit farther. I thought that duo performance was better than either of the adult team dances on “DWTS” earlier this season, and better than the adult freestyles too. You’d be hard-pressed to find many routines from the grownup show this season that were as clean, polished, and full of difficult choreographic content.
What did you think of their performance, and who do you think deserves to win the Mirror Ball Trophy? No one was eliminated from the Semi-Finals, so the final four remain the final four. Vote in our poll below.
