Nothing says corporate synergy like Disney Night on “Dancing with the Stars.” When Sky Brown performed a routine inspired by “Moana” on “DWTS: Juniors” (which airs on Disney-owned ABC) it wasn’t the first time the recent hit film got the ballroom treatment. It wasn’t the second time either. This was actually the third “Moana” routine on the show. That in and of itself isn’t all that surprising. But what is surprising is the fact that this was the second time a contestant specifically performed a contemporary routine to the song “How Far I’ll Go.” So who did it better: Brown or Simone Biles? Watch Brown’s performance above, and scroll down to see Biles’s.
Biles’s routine in the spring of 2017 for season 24 came just a few months after “Moana” was released, and she and her pro partner Sasha Farber got to dance to a live rendition of “How Far I’ll Go” performed by the movie’s breakout star Auli’i Cravalho. It was a big hit with the judges, scoring two 9s and two 10s from the panel for a total of 38 out of 40, which was the second best score that night behind Normani Kordei‘s “Mulan” paso doble.
Brown and her young pro partner JT Church‘s “Moana” number was also a hit with the judges, though she didn’t go as far as Biles. She got straight 8s from Val Chmerkovskiy, Mandy Moore and Adam Rippon, for a total of 24 out of 30. That was only good enough for fourth place on the leaderboard out of nine dancers, but after the judges’ critiques she won over the entire room by delivering an impassioned message to all the girls watching: “You can do anything. Just have fun, be brave and do it because you love it. Don’t let anybody stop you.”
Simone would be proud.
