While Apolo Anton Ohno easily topped our poll about your favorite male athlete “Dancing with the Stars” winner, things were much closer on the female side. But one champ did pull away in the end: Meryl Davis.
The ice dancer grabbed 33 percent of the vote, sliding by her three fellow Mirrorball and Olympic champs Kristi Yamaguchi, Shawn Johnson and Laurie Hernandez. Davis won Season 18 with Maksim Chermkovskiy and was simply “beyond compare,” user Tina wrote.
“Meryl Davis with Maks, without a doubt, the best ever!” user Marie Scapopalus added. “Danced as ‘one’! Perfect partners so in sync. Couldn’t get enough of them. My favorite dance is the Argentine Tango! They were awesome!”
Johnson came in second with 26 percent of the vote. The gymnast won Season 8 with Mark Ballas and at 17 was the show’s youngest champion until she was dethroned by Hernandez, who was 16 at the time of her Season 23 victory with Val Chmkerkovskiy. Hernandez received 22 percent of the vote.
“While Meryl Davis was gorgeous and elegant, my favorite female athlete winner was Laurie Hernandez!” user Diane wrote. “It was such a joy watching this adorable little 16-year-old gymnast grow and mature during the competition!”
Yamaguchi, who won Season 6 with Ballas, garnered 19 percent. The first female athlete champ in “Dancing” history, Yamaguchi was one of the show’s most dominant contestants, topping the leaderboard 10 out of 12 times during the season.
