‘Dancing with the Stars’ next theme season: After ‘Athletes,’ should they do singers, reality stars …? [POLL]

Dancing with the Stars” took a chance this past spring with a special all-athletes edition that lasted just four weeks. Responses to that were mixed to say the least, in large part because of the abbreviated schedule. But what about the choice of contestants? Should the show try another themed season bringing together celebrities with a common background? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.

There have now been 11 athlete winners of “DWTS,” so doing an all-athletes season was a good fit. But singers have also done quite well. Recording artists like Drew Lachey (season 2), Nicole Scherzinger (season 10) and Kellie Pickler (season 16) have won the Mirror Ball Trophy in the past, so perhaps an entire singers season is in order. Given the success of boy-band and girl-group members (Lachey sang with 98 Degrees, while Scherzinger was a member of the Pussycat Dolls), the show could probably assemble a roster for a “Boy Bands vs. Girl Groups” season with ease.

The show has also featured a number of reality stars, including past winners Melissa Rycroft (“The Bachelor”) in season 15 and Nyle DiMarco (“America’s Next Top Model”) in season 22. And we all know how much ABC loves synergy, so you could fill an entire season with “Bachelor,” “Bachelorette,” or “American Idol” alums since those shows also air on the Disney-owned network.

We’ve also seen former child stars do well (season 19 winner Alfonso Ribeiro, season 25 finalist Frankie Muniz) as well as American heroes (season 13 winner J.R. Martinez, season 21 finalist Alek Skarlatos), so you could fill an entire roster with celebs like those.

Or “DWTS” could bring back past contestants. The show aired an “All-Stars” season once before, in season 15, but that also included past winners. Why not cast a “Second Chance” season featuring contestants who were eliminated too soon, like figure skater Charlie White (season 18), actress Heather Morris (season 24), and figure skater Mirai Nagasu (season 26), who all seemed worthy of the finals but didn’t make it.

The sky’s the limit when it comes to assembling a cast for “DWTS.” Vote in our poll below to let us know what you think the next theme season should be, or if the show should never do another theme season again.
