‘Dancing with the Stars’ outrage: Did Nikki Glaser deserve to be eliminated when Grocery Store Joe was SAFE?

Dancing with the Starsstarted its 27th season with a couple of big plot twists. In the two-night premiere event on September 24-25, “Bachelorette” and “Bachelor in Paradise” alum Joe Amabile (aka “Grocery Store Joe”) got the lowest score from the judges after struggling through the choreography of his quickstep with pro partner Jenna Johnson. But it was comedian Nikki Glaser who was eliminated instead on Tuesday night.

The fact that Amabile survived isn’t entirely surprising. Lowest-scoring contestants often advance through the competition since their fans voting from home rally around them in their time of need. The shock came in Tuesday night’s show when we found out that Amabile wasn’t even close to being eliminated.

Host Tom Bergeron announced that only the bottom six dancers from Monday night’s show based on the judges’ scores and viewer votes would perform again on Tuesday. The top seven would move safely on to week two. And Grocery Store Joe, as it turned out, was completely safe. Despite having the lowest score from the judges, he was one of the top seven contestants when viewer votes were counted. To move up that far he must have had one of the highest vote totals out of all the celebrities. Perhaps he was even the most popular contestant.

Meanwhile, Bergeron spared one more of the bottom six (John Schneider), leaving just the bottom five celebs to perform again, and all of them were women: Glaser, Danelle Umstead, Nancy McKeon, Mary Lou Retton and Alexis Ren, the last of whom had one of the highest judges’ scores on Monday night. Most of them improved on their Monday marks, but for Glaser it wasn’t enough to escape the executioner.
