Michael Easton is a Daytime Emmys pre-nominee for Best Actor for his role as Hamilton Finn on the ABC soap “General Hospital.” It’s a relatively new role, introduced in March 2016, but Easton has been a daytime staple for almost two decades. Despite his long soap-opera resume, however, he has yet to be nominated for an Emmy. Will this be his year?
Easton’s first soap opera credit was “Days of Our Lives,” where he played Tanner Scofield from 1990-1992. But he made his biggest impact in 2001 when he joined the cast of “Port Charles.” A spin-off of “GH,” that series was taking a supernatural turn in the early 2000s, so naturally Easton’s character Caleb Morley turned out to be a vampire. But “PC” was cancelled in 2003, so Easton immediately jumped ship to fellow ABC soap opera “One Life to Live” where he played Detective John McBain for almost a decade, until that show got the axe in 2012.
After “OLTL” ended the character of John McBain was imported to “GH.” However, the production company Prospect Park was trying to relaunch “OLTL” as an online streaming series, leading to a legal dispute between them and ABC over the rights to the characters. That led “GH” to write out John McBain, but that didn’t spell the end for Easton. The show brought the actor back just a few months later as a new character, Dr. Silas Clay.
But wait, there’s more. Poor Dr. Clay was killed off of “GH” in 2015, and Easton was re-reintroduced to the show in 2016 as Hamilton Finn. Those are plot twists worthy of any of the four soaps Easton has starred in, but despite 17 years of almost continuous work in daytime TV he’s still awaiting his first recognition from the TV academy.
