“You want to end a show on a high note, and I really think we’ve done that,” said “Dancing with the Stars” host Tom Bergeron after football player DeMarcus Ware gave the last performance on premiere night for season 27 of the dance competition series. Football players have a long legacy of success on “DWTS”: the sport accounts for four Mirror Ball Trophy winners. And for Ware to perform his opening-night cha cha following all 12 of his competitors put even more pressure on his broad shoulders.
But it turned out to be no trouble at all for the NFL veteran and his pro partner Lindsay Arnold, at least not where the judges were concerned. Watch his performance above, and read the judges’ comments below.
Len Goodman: “You’ve got a fantastic presence when you come out onto the floor. You’ve got a wonderful personality. And you’re not a bad dancer either.”
Bruno Tonioli: “I have to say, that was the delightful, delicious DeMarcus the dancer! You’re as strong as titanium, but you’re light as a feather. You were so light in your steps I could hardly hear you hitting the floor — it’s incredible. You really are the one to watch, I’m telling you.”
Carrie Ann Inaba: “I agree with you, Bruno. Football players have a huge legacy to live up to on this show. We can see why now tonight because of that athleticism, that charisma and that inner light that comes out of you when you dance. It’s like, yum!”
Ware’s performance earned him 8s from Inaba and Tonioli and a 7 from Goodman, giving him a total score of 23 out of 30, tying him for the top of the judges’ leaderboard with R&B singer Tinashe. Did you agree with that result? And could Ware become the fifth Mirror Ball champion from the NFL?
