Wow. Christian Bale IS Dick Cheney!
Stop whatever you are doing right now and watch the just-released trailer (above) for “Vice,” Adam McKay’s sly satirical take on the military-minded mastermind who pulled most of the strings during the two-term reign of U.S. President George W. Bush. The film, which opens on Christmas Day, looks to be just the right present for our current divisive political atmosphere.
Bale is a notorious chameleon when it comes to committing to roles, losing 63 pounds for his title role in 2004’s “The Machinist” or pumping iron for 2000’s “American Psycho” and his stint as Batman.
But his incredible transformation in “Vice” into the 77-year-old politician — as seen in this just-released trailer — is positively gasp-worthy. From the pot-bellied physique and corona of sparse silver hair to the those wire-rimmed specs and ruthless swagger, Bale nails it. Also, shout-out for Sam Rockwell’s distinctive Bush schnozz.
McKay has been good for Bale and vice-versa. The last time the 44-year-old Welsh actor, who won a Best Supporting Oscar for his rail-thin, drug-addicted boxer Dicky Ecklund in 2010’s “The Fighter,” got together with the one-time Frat Pack helmer, it was for “The Big Short.” That deep dive into the 2007-2008 housing crisis would earn a supporting Oscar bid for Bale, an adapted screenplay win for McKay and Charles Randolph and nominations for picture, directing and film editing.
Right now, Bale is ranked second among potential lead actor candidates, right behind “A Star Is Born’s” Bradley Cooper in Gold Derby’s combined rankings. But something tells me there might be an upward shift soon.
Also in the cast is Amy Adams as Cheney’s wife, Lynne, Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfield and Tyler Perry as Colin Powell. I’m just hoping that Quailgate plays a part and there are enough references to “weapons of mass destruction” to require a drinking game.
