“The universe is calling,” says the new teaser trailer for “Doctor Who” season 11. The minute-long clip, which premiered during the World Cup, gives us another brief glimpse of Jodie Whittaker as the 13th version of the time-traveling alien — and the 1st female version. What hints does it give us about the new episodes? Watch it above to find out.
The new season started shooting late last year and is scheduled to premiere this fall with Chris Chibnall in the driver’s seat as showrunner after Emmy winner Steven Moffat stepped down after season 10. Not only are the writer and star new to the show, it will also feature three brand new companions for the Doctor to take on her journeys: Ryan (Tosin Cole), Yasmin (Mandip Gill), and Graham (Bradley Walsh), who can all be seen in the teaser.
Recent seasons of “Doctor Who” have usually featured the title character with just one or two traveling companions, but having a full-time trio join the Doctor in the TARDIS is not unprecedented. In fact, the very first Doctor (William Hartnell) traveled with three companions when the show debuted 55 years ago in 1963. But don’t worry, the TARDIS looks small, but I have it on good authority that it’s bigger on the inside.
In the teaser the Doctor swipes a bit of breakfast from Ryan, delivers pizza to a hungry Yasmin, and replaces Graham’s reading material with a 1981 issue of Beano magazine, which Matt Smith‘s 11th Doctor had been reading in the 2013 episode “The Rings of Akhaten.”
Perhaps that clever callback is an indication to fans: most everything about “Who” will be brand new this year — from the cast to the head writer to the logo — but the Doctor hasn’t forgotten her roots.
