Dr. Steven Eisenberg, an oncologist from San Diego, CA, performed an original song for his loving mother during the Tuesday, June 26 episode of “America’s Got Talent.” After the four “AGT” judges — Howie Mandel, Simon Cowell, Mel B and Heidi Klum — all hit their X’s, Steven’s mom couldn’t hold back her feelings. She broke away from host Tyra Banks, grabbed a microphone and then joined her son on stage where she went ballistic on the judges. “Wait a minute, wait a minute,” she declared. “You cannot forget, he’s not here because he’s a singer. He’s here because he’s a compassionate human being and he writes from his heart and he wrote this song for us. So it’s not about his voice, it’s about his heart, and that’s what [the patients] love.”
“Okay, Mom, back to Tyra,” an embarrassed Steven said as he tried pushing his mother off stage. But she wasn’t done talking.
As Simon tried to start the voting, she interjected, “Howie, I want to tell you, I understand what your mother must feel like. ‘St. Elsewhere,’ right? You were a doctor.”
“But it was pretend,” Howie deadpanned about his 1980s TV role of Dr. Wayne Fiscus.
The judges started voting “no” one after the other, which got Steven’s mother even more irate. “I just want to tell you that he is so amazing. Can you imagine a mother having a son write a song about her? It’s pretty amazing.”
After Steven and his mother walked off the stage, Simon turned to his co-judges and remarked, “That was very uncomfortable, by the way.”
In his “AGT” recap, our live-blogger John Benutty summarized, “As an oncologist, Dr. Steven Eisenberg started writing and performing songs for his patients, but now he’s come to ‘AGT’ to expand his practice by inspiring his message of love beyond the walls of the hospital. Tonight he wrote and performed an original song dedicated to his mom. The song wasn’t exactly the healing kind of medicine, inspiring four X’s in quick succession, starting with Mel and Heidi then Simon and ending with Howie. The judges admire his dedication to his patients, but despite a desperate plea on stage from his mom the panel held on to their NO votes and sent him home.”
