RuPaul Charles (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”) is the overwhelming favorite to win the Best Reality Host Emmy for the third year in a row, but he needs to watch out for Ellen DeGeneres (“Ellen’s Game of Games”). Not only is she in second place in our odds, but two of our Top 24 Users, Mr.Bee and Jason Nolette, are picking her for the upset.
A former comedy writing winner for the iconic “Puppy Episode” of “Ellen,” DeGeneres is competing in the host category for the first time, so she’s untested against everyone. She’s no stranger to hosting wins though: She took home four Best Talk Show Host Daytime Emmys for “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” before removing herself from contention in 2010. Voters might just check her off because they like her and her talk show. Plus, “Game of Games” is based on the game segments on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”
Charles is aiming to be the second person to three-peat in the category after Jeff Probst (“Survivor”), who won the category’s first four awards, was unceremoniously dropped and hasn’t been nominated since.
Outside of DeGeneres, Charles has defeated the other nominees before: W. Kamau Bell (“United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell”), 2013 champs Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn (“Project Runway”), and two-time champ Jane Lynch (“Hollywood Game Night”), who sat out last year. Lynch is the only other multiple winner in the category besides Charles and Probst.
