Emily Blunt may very well fly as high as a kite up our Best Actress Oscar predictions in the next few weeks. The “Mary Poppins Returns” star jumped up to seventh place in our combined odds last week after initial screenings of the film, and now a week later, she’s risen again to sixth place.
With 18/1 odds, Blunt is on the outside looking in on our projected top five: Lady Gaga (“A Star Is Born”), Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”), Glenn Close (“The Wife”), Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) and Yalitza Aparicio (“Roma”). Blunt leapfrogged over Viola Davis (“Widows”), who has fallen from fifth place to seventh in the last two weeks, thanks to five Experts predicting a nomination for her, three more than last week.
It feels like a matter of time before Blunt breaks into the top five in what is one of the most competitive Best Actress races in years. She’s received fantastic notices for her winning turn as the enigmatic nanny, a part that earned Julie Andrews the Oscar in the 1964 original. The sequel opens next week, which would garner even more buzz for Blunt if it’s the box-office hit it’s projected to be.
Blunt, who is in 13th place in the supporting race for “A Quiet Place,” is also closing in on Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”), the Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress frontrunner. A victory there would definitely bode well for to receive her first career Oscar nomination. Andrews took home the same award before winning the Oscar.
