Wyoming-born comedian French Accent got off to a rocky start during his “America’s Got Talent” audition on the Tuesday, June 26 episode. The audience booed at his first jokes, while “AGT” judges Simon Cowell, Mel B and Heidi Klum all pressed their X’s. But that’s when his routine took a complete turn-around. French started playing off the fact that he was getting X’s, and the audience was soon changing their tune. In the end, both Mel and Heidi removed their X’s and along with Howie Mandel voted to send him through to the next round. Watch the “Americas Got Talent” audition above and read the judges’ comments below.
“You are really funny, you are really unique,” noted Howie. “The key of a really good comic is to play in the moment. Here’s a guy who made the three X’s really funny, made what was going on in this room really funny. I just, uh, I loved it.”
Mel B declared, “I’m actually gonna agree with you, Howie, because I’m gonna take my X back. You’re way funnier in the moment. That’s what made me laugh.”
When Heidi said, “You’re a real great entertainer — witty, goofy at the same time,” the audience started chanting, “Take it back! Take it back!” So Heidi declared, “I’m gonna take my X back.”
Simon then grimaced, “I’m not gonna take my X back.” And French Accent got even more laughs when he responded, “There’s gotta be a villain!”
In his “AGT” recap, our live-blogger John Benutty wrote, “French Accent surprised the panel by building his act into an actually funny comedy routine. Mel was so surprised that she removed an X she gave him early in the act and then amidst cheers from an adoring audience Heidi took her X back, too. Staying true to character, Simon maintained his X and served French a NO, but the other three judges all gave him a YES so he advanced despite Simon’s disregard.”
