Sunday night during the Top 14 performance episode of “American Idol,” 18-year-old Garrett Jacobs sang Phillip Phillips‘ “Raging Fire” for judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. This Bossier City, Louisiana resident is a football player-turned-singer who’s hoping to wow America with his voice and trusty guitar. Was Garrett’s performance good enough to send him through to the Top 10 of Season 16? Watch the “American Idol” video above and then read the judges’ comments below.
“Garrett, you know, that was a very dynamic performance from you,” admitted Luke. “Were there little pitchy things? Yes. But man I can get over that. You took us on a little ride. You brought it down, you got tender with things, you got loud and big. You looked comfortable up there. You’re our first performer that really looked comfortable tonight. Good job.”
“What I want you to remember is that I saw you go in and out of consciousness,” announced Lionel. “When I say that, you would go in and go, ‘I hit a great note, oh my God, how did that look?’ Just stay in character. But other than that, I’ve been watching you grow and develop and I can’t even believe it. You’re doing so well.”
Katy chimed in, “Garrett, I actually believe that you’re comfortable up there. I would suggest when you go back and high five everyone, just make everyone do five-ten jumping jacks. I understand everyone’s been waiting for tonight, but I really want everyone to win. So they just gotta bring their A-game. That’s a critique for everyone else. I’m mean, you’re doing great, sweetie!”
In his “American Idol” live blog recap, Denton Davidson said, “Clearly Garrett is the biggest heartthrob this season so he will naturally pull votes from that alone. But can he improve his singing? Based on the first verse of this song, not yet. Garrett’s voice hasn’t caught up to his likability factor, which is through the roof. Phillips had such a recognizable tone, whereas Garrett is a bit more vanilla. That being said, this is far from a disaster; it’s actually not bad.”
