“Contemporary dancer murdered hip-hop just now,” said a triumphant Genessy Castillo on “So You Think You Can Dance” when the top 10 women performed for a spot in the upcoming live shows. This final round of cuts at the Academy challenged the top 10 women to perform with an all-star partner in a style that is not their specialty. It was all about getting out of their comfort zone, and the five women who succeeded are moving on to compete for America’s votes. Watch Castillo’s performance above.
Castillo performed her hip-hop routine with all-star partner Fik-Shun, who was the male winner of season 10 in 2013 in addition to competing in the first season of “World of Dance” in 2017. So it was much to her credit that she was able to keep up with him. She impressed the judges so much with her hip-hop moves that even though she had previously flown under the radar and experienced confidence issues, they sent her through to the next round of the competition. Read what the judges had to say below.
Nigel Lythgoe: “Genessy … Wow, who would have thought? How much hip-hop have you done in the past? You’ve certainly put the work in, and it shows. To do a reverse attitude turn on your knee — ouch!”
Vanessa Hudgens: “It was amazing. You totally brought the fire. I loved your passion and your performance. It was so much fun to watch. It was great. Really good work.”
Mary Murphy: “I can’t believe your attitude right now. You were really in it, and I could totally tell Fik-Shun loved dancing with you.”
You can see Castillo next when she takes the stage during the live shows along with fellow female finalists Chelsea Hough, Jensen Arnold, Magda Fialek, and Hannahlei Cabanilla. Does Castillo deserve to win season 15? Let us know below which of the top five women you’re rooting for.
