Just how close is the Best Original Screenplay Oscar race? We’ve had two lead changes in our combined odds in the last 24 hours. As we expected, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” took over the No. 1 position Monday after “Lady Bird”’s Writers Guild Awards loss, but “Three Billboards”’s stay was short-lived. WGA champ “Get Out” is now our top prediction.
“Get Out” has 9/5 odds and is the No. 1 choice of eight Experts, four Editors and six of our Top 24 Users, who scored the best last year. “Three Billboards” is breathing down its neck with 2/1 odds, supported by 10 Experts, two Editors and 11 top Users. “Lady Bird” (14/5 odds) has slid back to third, with four Experts, two Editors and seven top Users still believing it will fly off with the trophy. “The Shape of Water” (22/1 odds) and “The Big Sick” (80/1 odds) are way back in this ostensible three-horse race.
The WGA was “Get Out”’s first major win of the season, but the field was absent of “Three Billboards,” which wasn’t eligible. They are both nominated at the BAFTAs, where “Three Billboards,” the Golden Globe screenplay champ, is predicted to win.
