“Glee” singer Noah Guthrie returned to “America’s Got Talent” during Tuesday’s Semifinals 2 episode with an original take on Whitney Houston‘s “I Will Always Love You.” While the judges weren’t over-the-moon with his performance, they agreed that he was the best act they’d seen up to that point in the live show. Do you think Noah will advance to the “AGT” Finals? Watch the “Americas Got Talent” video above, read the judges’ comments below, and then make your predictions before Wednesday’s results show.
Heidi Klum: “I love the way you stripped down the song, kind of like the way Dolly Parton originally did. And I really like that because you can’t really hide behind anything, you know? It’s just your guitar, it’s just your beautiful voice and your heart on your sleeve. You really sang with a lot of heart and I really enjoyed it.”
Simon Cowell: “Noah, you know, your VT said it all. You’ve got the most important decision possibly of your life to make tonight. I thought it was a really smart idea, but for me it was a song of two halves. When you first started singing, I thought this was absolutely horrible. And then the second half, particularly the last say 20 seconds, your voice sounded great. So I genuinely don’t know whether you made the right decision tonight or not, but it was brave to take that leap.”
Howie Mandel: “Well, I think you made the absolute right decision. I really do. I think it’s a great song, I think you made it your own, I think it was perfect for your voice. I loved it. You’re the third act out, so far the best of the evening. Only five are going through. Right now in my book you are ahead of everyone else. Right now.”
Mel B: “Well, let’s not forget, I mean, your voice is so soulful and rich and powerful. That alone stands out from everybody else. You know, your voice is unique-sounding. Having said that, I personally didn’t like that rendition. But there’s no getting away from your voice. So I’m 50/50, I have to be honest.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper Denton Davidson had this to say about the performance: “Singer Noah Guthrie is tonight’s third act. He’s admitted that song choice has been a struggle for him this season. Tonight he’s performing a cover of ‘I Will Always Love You,’ the monster smash penned by Dolly Parton and brought to new heights by Whitney Houston. He’s added his own bluesy twist to it and his husky voice is just enough to make it sound original. All that said, I’m not into it. At all. I would never want to listen to this version again. Too many singers this season have a terrible habit of screaming through the song.”
