Golden Globes film predictions slugfest 2019: Will ‘A Star is Born’ sweep drama races while comedies clash? [WATCH]

“I just think they want to be taken seriously for the Oscars and other awards. So to be declared a drama is maybe a step up in some ways,” explains Gold Derby editor Susan Wloszczyna about why “A Star is Born” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” were entered as dramas instead of musicals at the Golden Globes. And as Paul Sheehan points out, “We’re all taking ‘A Star is Born’ very seriously,” since we’re predicting it to win Best Film Drama. Watch Wloszczyna and Sheehan discuss the Globes for film with Chris Beachum, Joyce Eng and Daniel Montgomery above.

“I just can’t see anything taking it down,” says Eng about ‘A Star is Born,’ which is also forecast to win both lead acting prizes for drama for Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. All five of us are predicting the film to sweep those three drama races, even Sheehan, who had been predicting Julia Roberts for “Ben is Back” earlier in the season, so it looks like it was a smart move after all for “A Star is Born” to jump ship from the musical categories, which look like they might actually be more competitive than the drama races this year.

“This comedy category, even without [‘A Star is Born’ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’], is very, very strong,” Beachum argues. So it might not have been a cakewalk for “Star” if it had competed against musicals and laffers. Wloszczyna is betting on “‘The Favourite’ being the favorite,” but Montgomery says, “I recently moved ‘Mary Poppins’ into my number-one spot” for both Best Film and Best Actress (Emily Blunt). And that doesn’t even take into account additional challengers like top Oscar hopefuls “Vice” and “Green Book” and the groundbreaking blockbuster “Crazy Rich Asians.”

So who will win those hotly contested comedy/musical races, and is “A Star is Born” destined to dominate all other dramas?
