You’re not the only one who’s happy that Joe “Grocery Store Joe” Amabile is finally gone from “Dancing with the Stars” — he is too.
“I don’t know if I had another dance in me,” Amabile tells “Entertainment Tonight” (watch above). “That’s why I was kind of relieved.”
After an improbable run to the semifinal, the “Bachelorette” alum was booted in the double elimination on Monday along with Juan Pablo Di Pace, who appeared to be locked for the final with a pair of perfect scores that night. It was another shocking elimination of a top contender, but this time Amabile is glad he didn’t also outlast him. “The bottom three — Alexis [Ren] and Alan [Bersten], and Juan Pablo and Cheryl [Burke] — I didn’t want to kick either of them out,” Amabile says. “Juan Pablo unfortunately is going home, but I’m glad I’m not here [still on the show] and he’s gone.”
Both Amabile and his partner Jenna Johnson are content to leave on a high note, nabbing their highest score, a 24, which probably seemed impossible in Week 1 when they got a 14 and didn’t even crack 20 points until Week 6. “I feel like this is our best night yet, and I’m so happy to go out on this night,” Johnson says. “I couldn’t be more proud. And I just feel so happy. He conquered it and we made it to the freaking semifinals. Are you kidding?”
Amabile never had any illusion about his dance ability, or lack thereof, and says he definitely won’t miss “performing.” “I wouldn’t have changed anything. I’m very happy with it. I was myself the whole time,” he says. “Do I think I’m the best dancer in the competition? No. Do I have the best smile? Probably. But I’m very happy with making it this far. We thought we were going to get eliminated Week 1, so I couldn’t have asked for it to go better.”
But he’s still got one last dance — or something — coming on next week’s finale. “We actually have a pretty epic surprise for everyone next week,” Johnson teases.
