HBO will lead Best Comedy Series at Emmys with 2 shows nominated: ‘Silicon Valley’ and ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’

Based on Gold Derby’s Emmy predictions, for the seventh year in a row HBO will have at least two shows nominated as Best Comedy Series. Even with three-time champ “Veep” out of the running, the premium network is expected to retain its streak thanks to Season 5 of “Silicon Valley” and Season 9 of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” The other five Emmy nominees in this tight race are predicted to be FX’s “Atlanta,” Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” ABC’s “Black-ish,” Amazon’s “GLOW” and NBC’s “Will and Grace.”

“Silicon Valley” is currently four-for-four in terms of Best Comedy Series nominations, losing to “Modern Family” in 2014 and “Veep” in 2015-17. Lead actor Thomas Middleditch earned a bid in 2016 for the tech-savvy comedy, which also constantly shows up in the writing and directing categories. To date the show has taken home two below the line Emmy Awards: Best Production Design and Best Picture Editing in 2015.

“Curb Your Enthusiasm” has had an entirely different Emmy trajectory. The show was nominated as Best Comedy Series for Seasons 2-8 over the span of 10 years (2002-12) because of its on-again, off-again schedule. It’s now been six years since the comedy last contended at the Emmys, but that absence likely won’t hurt its chances. Gold Derby is also predicting that “Curb” will score three acting nominations, for lead Larry David and guest stars Lin-Manuel Miranda and Bryan Cranston.

HBO’s streak of having two or more comedies nominated in this category began in 2012 when “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Girls” and “Veep” all earned series bids. They lost to “Modern Family,” which was in the midst of a historic five-year run. The first-ever HBO laffer to prevail was “Sex and the City” back in 2001.
