Just days after Vanessa Kirby earned an Emmy nomination for her riveting portrayal of Princess Margaret in the Netflix drama “The Crown,” we are getting our first look at her successor in the role: Helena Bonham Carter. The Oscar-nominated actress takes over the part as the historical docudrama moves on in time to the late 1960s and 1970s.
This new photo, which Netflix released on “The Crown” twitter feed, shows Carter in a contemplative mood as Margaret. The monarch’s younger sister had a difficult time of it and was known to be less than satisfied with her lot in life. The actress reaped her second Oscar bid and won the BAFTA for portraying the Queen’s mother in “The King’s Speech.” Could she be Emmy bound for her take on the Queen’s sister? After all, this is the juiciest of roles as the timeline includes the break-up of Margaret’s marriage to Anthony Armstrong-Jones (Ben Daniels).
Replacing Claire Foy as Margaret’s older and wiser sister is BAFTA winner Olivia Colman. And “Outlander” star Tobias Menzies takes on the part of Prince Philip played for two seasons by Matt Smith.
As with the first set of players, this new cast is signed for two seasons, which are being filmed concurrently. We expect the streaming service to drop the first of these, season 3, in time for consideration at the 2019 Emmys. Have you made your predictions for this year’s awards?
