“I love what you stand for, but I don’t love it for this show, so it’s a ‘no’ for me,” Howie Mandel told Voices of Hope Children’s Choir on Tuesday’s fourth audition episode of “America’s Got Talent.” This group of 70 kids from Orange County warmed America’s heart with their rendition of “This Is Me” from “The Greatest Showman,” but Mandel wasn’t having it. After his Grinch-like comments, Mandel was promptly booed by the audience. Fortunately his vote ended up not mattering in the end because the other three “AGT” judges — Simon Cowell, Mel B and Heidi Klum — all voted “yes,” sending the kids through to the next round. Watch the “Americas Got Talent” audition above and read the judges’ comments below.
Heidi: “Well, I absolutely adore you guys. I so much prefer a children’s choir than an adult choir. It’s so much more fun. And I also have to say, the solo vocals were spectacular. Well done. Very good, the three of you.”
Mel B: “Oh my gosh, I loved it, I really did. Beautifully done. I think if you get through to the next round you’ve got to up your game a little bit more. But well done, all you lot. Well done.”
Simon: “I’m with Heidi, I love children’s choirs like this. It always makes me feel good. I love your choice of song. This is a group I believe, if you get through to the next round, is gonna rehearse, gonna commit and can definitely get better.”
In his “AGT” recap, our live-blogger John Benutty wrote, “Singing ‘This Is Me,’ the kids set an incredibly high bar for the rest of the night, from the first solo to the booming sound of all of them together on the chorus. As good as it was, Mel was spot on advising them that if they get through to the next round they need to up their game. For Howie, it was a NO (he “doesn’t love it for the show”), but for Heidi it was a definite YES. Because she likes the idea of having a choir on the show, Mel said YES and Simon rounded it out with a third YES to send them through to the next round!”
