Can Imagine Dragons beat The Chainsmokers at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards?

Imagine Dragons are the front-runners to win Top Duo or Group at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards. That’s according to the combined predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby users who have given us their picks in our predictions center thus far. It would be their second victory in the category following their win in 2014, which would tie them with Destiny’s Child as the second most awarded group in this category — One Direction holds the record with three wins. But Imagine Dragons has to watch out for a possible upset by The Chainsmokers.

The Billboard Awards aren’t based on artistry, per se. They reward fan interactions with music through a combination of record sales, radio airplay, streaming performance, touring, and social media interaction, the same criteria used to determine the Billboard charts. And by those standards it has been a good year for Imagine Dragons. They released their third studio album “Evolve” in 2017, and it has gone platinum. Also, two singles from the album — “Believer” and “Thunder” — both reached the top-five on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. So the consensus of our users is that they’re out front with leading odds of 9/10 to win this award.

But don’t count out The Chainsmokers. The EDM duo dropped their first studio album “Memories…Do Not Open” in 2017, which has also gone platinum since its release. In addition, their breakthrough hit single “Closer,” which reached number-one in 2016, was still going strong on the Hot 100 into 2017, and with additional top-10 hits “Paris” and “Something Just Like This” (with Coldplay) they made history with 61 consecutive weeks in the top-10, more than any other duo or group, and second to Katy Perry (69 weeks from 2010-2011) among all artists.

Due to those impressive chart achievements, The Chainsmokers ranked sixth on Billboard’s year-end list of the top artists of 2017, while Imagine Dragons trailed in 14th place. So even though they’re second in our predictions with 3/1 odds, they might be positioned for an upset. But both groups should just be glad One Direction broke up, or else they might have romped through the category for a fourth time.
