Jacob Derwin may have been the second castaway voted out of “Survivor: Ghost Island,” but he’s well aware of the fact that he could have been the first. He tells us that the only thing that prevented him from being eliminated earlier was that he was sent to Ghost Island. “I could not have saved myself. You can’t fight an entire tribe,” Jacob confesses about his Malolo tribe. “Short of me finding an idol, I don’t think I would have survived.” Listen to our “Survivor” exit interview podcast above.
Even though Jacob was voted off early, does he gain some solace knowing that he’ll go down in the “Survivor” record books as the first person to ever visit Ghost Island? “You know, it’s a funny distinction. One could look at it as a pride point. For me it’s kind of just this weird coincidence. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I definitely tried to get myself there and I accomplished that one of the times I needed it. It’s a funny little trivia question to be the answer to.”

While at Ghost Island Jacob made a fake immunity idol that looked rather believable. He later showed it to his tribe and everything seemed to be going according to plan, until Brendan Shapiro asked to see the paper that came with the idol. “It was a great call,” Jacob readily admits. “Don’t get me wrong, I thought about it. I was out on Ghost Island trying to think, how can I fake parchment? Can’t just write it in dirt. I had no other choice than to just come up with some crazy lie like I lost it. That was all I had.”
Also in our “Survivor: Ghost Island” exit interview, Jacob talks more about the specifics of Ghost Island, his journey trying to get cast on the reality TV show, and who he picks as the smartest player on the island. In the two-hour season premiere Stephanie Gonzalez was the first person eliminated, meaning only 18 players are left in the game. Who do you think has the best shot at winning “Survivor: Ghost Island”?
