With ‘Jane’ skunked at Oscars, what will win Best Documentary Feature: ‘Faces Places,’ ‘Last Men in Aleppo,’ ‘Icarus’ … ?

When the 2018 Oscar nominations were announced, the documentary “Jane” about the life of British primatologist Jane Goodall was skunked in the race for Best Documentary Feature. This was one of the year’s biggest snubs as Gold Derby had been predicting that this feature from director Brett Morgen would WIN the Oscar. Perhaps the fact that Goodall’s busy schedule kept her away from Oscar campaigning had a negative impact on voters? Whatever the case, this year’s crop of documentary nominees is equally deserving, but what will win between “Faces Places,” “Last Men in Aleppo,” “Icarus,” “Strong Island” and “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail”?

As of this writing, “Faces Places” has the best odds to prevail at 2/5, according to our combined Oscar predictions. This French doc directed by Agnes Varda and JR follows the duo as they travel around painting portraits of the individuals they meet along the journey.

“Last Men in Aleppo,” directed by Firas Fayyad, is next in line with 8/1 odds to win. The film depicts life in Aleppo during the Syrian Civil War, focusing on the search-and-rescue missions organized by the “White Helmets,” whose actions were chronicled in last year’s Oscar winner for Best Documentary Short.

In third place with 11/1 odds is “Icarus” from director Bryan Fogel. Amazingly, Fogel was documenting the exploration of steroid use in sports when he unintentionally came upon an actual doping scandal involving Russian athletes during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Director Yance Ford‘s film “Strong Island” has 20/1 odds to take home the trophy. This emotional tale that chronicles the murder of Ford’s brother has already claimed victory at the Gotham Award for Best Documentary, so might an Oscar be next?

Finally, “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail” rounds out Gold Derby’s predictions with odds of 33/1. Director Steve James tells the story of the family-run Abacus Federal Savings Bank, which was the only institution to face criminal charges during the banking crisis of 2007-09.

2018 Oscar predictions for Best Documentary Feature:
“Faces Places” — 2/5 odds
“Last Men in Aleppo” — 8/1 odds
“Icarus” — 11/1 odds
“Strong Island” — 20/1 odds
“Abacus: Small Enough to Jail” — 33/1 odds
