Jason Maybaum (‘Dancing with the Stars: Juniors’) had a bloody good, blood-sucking tango on Halloween Night [WATCH]

Jason Maybaum really sucked on “Dancing with the Stars: Juniors” — and I mean that as a compliment. On Halloween Night he played a vampire for his Argentine tango to (appropriately) “Youngblood” by 5 Seconds of Summer, and it turned out to be a blood-sucking breakthrough for the Disney Channel star. Watch his performance above.

Maybaum didn’t have the most promising start when the season started. He received a score of 18 out of 30 for his opening night cha cha, which placed him 10th out of 12 contestants on the judges’ leaderboard. The only celebs who scored lower — Addison Osta Smith and Tripp Johnston — were both eliminated from the competition that night, so Maybaum may have just barely dodged that bullet. But since then he has been steadily creeping up in his scores.

Then in week two (Song from the Year I was Born Night) he scored 21 for his jive, placing him 7th out of 10 contestants. And in week three (Disney Night) he scored 22 for his “Toy Story” foxtrot, placing him 5th out of 9 contestants. Halloween Night was yet another personal best score and ranking for the young actor. It was hard to imagine him undertaking such a serious, vampiric tango after he previously performed more lighthearted numbers, but the style suited him.

He received a 9 from Mandy Moore and 8s from Val Chmerkovskiy and Adam Rippon, giving him a total of 25 out of 30. That tied him with Mackenzie Ziegler as the 3rd best dancer of the night, which is especially impressive because Ziegler came to the show with a lot more dance experience than Maybaum had. And this is exactly the right trajectory for a “DWTS” contestant to be on: showing steady improvement on the dance floor is the perfect way to appeal to the judges and to fans, who get to root for an underdog going up against the front-runners. At this rate, could he even win the Mirror Ball Trophy?
