Contemporary dancer Jay Jay Dixonbey (‘So You Think You Can Dance’) faced his arch-nemesis: ballroom [WATCH]

Contemporary dancer Jay Jay Dixonbey wasn’t a big fan of ballroom the last time he encountered the style while at the Academy on “So You Think You Can Dance,” so the final round of cuts before the live shows could have been a nightmare for him. This round forced him and the other nine contestants to perform a duet in a style that’s not their specialty. And what did Dixonbey get? Ballroom of course.

The charismatic dancer performed a cha cha with “SYTYCD” all-star Chelsie Hightower, but while judge Nigel Lythgoe thought he had a few issues with his form, it turned out to be a relatively minor quibble. Though it’s a problem he’ll need to watch out for during the live shows. Read what the judges had to say about his routine below.

Vanessa Hudgens: “Jay Jay, is there anything you can’t do? For real, your cha cha looked flawless. Your lines were gorgeous, your height was beautiful, your performance was so captivating. You’re such a powerhouse. I love watching you dance.”

Mary Murphy: “Every time you take the stage we’re just drawn to you. I love the fact that the choreographer used a lot of your talents and really made a fabulous show number.”

Nigel Lythgoe: “Just be a little careful. You’re breaking your line. But otherwise, I don’t think you put a foot wrong, which is good for a dancer.”

Dixonbey’s charming and athletic cha cha earned him one of the five spots for the men in the live shows along with Evan DeBenedetto, Darius Hickman, Cole Mills and Slavik Pustovoytov. Do you think the judges sent the right men through to the next round?
