Jennifer Hudson agonizes over ‘The Voice’ soul battle but ultimately keeps Franc West over Matt Johnson [WATCH]

During Monday’s episode of “The Voice” Season 15, Jennifer Hudson paired up soul singers Franc West and Matt Johnson in a battle to Alex Clare‘s “Too Close.” She had a tough time choosing between them both, but ultimately decided to go with Franc because “the show is called ‘The Voice.'” Did Jennifer make the right decision by saving Franc, or should she have chosen to keep Matt instead? Watch NBC’s “The Voice” battle video above and read the coaches’ comments below.

After the other three coaches — Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine — had their say, it was Jennifer’s turn to address her two talented artists. “Matt, you’re a character. You just want it and it’s enjoyable to watch,” she declared. “Franc, you have the swag and your voice is very distinctive. It’s not often you run into a voice like yours.”

Jennifer continued, “Both of you are amazing and at the end of the day you should be patting yourself on the back for getting this far. Both of you bring something different to the table, but the show is called ‘The Voice’ so it has to be about the voice. So I’m gonna have to go with Franc.” That means Franc now advances to the knockout rounds, while Matt has been eliminated from Season 15.

In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the battle: “As promised by the song choice, the battle proved that both guys have the ability to take their soul foundation and interpret it in ways beyond that. The performance had an expected rock feel, allowing them to show off the grittier aspects of their voices. In critiques, Kelly preferred the roundness of Matt’s voice and Adam followed suit. Blake, however, was more surprised by Franc and advised Jennifer to choose him. In Jennifer’s opinion her decision had to ‘be about the voice’ and so she went with Franc!”
