Grey Sloan Memorial’s revolving doors have claimed two more victims: Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew will exit “Grey’s Anatomy” at the end of the current 14th season.
While neither of their contracts are up, producers decided not to pick up their options for creative reasons, Deadline reports. It’s unclear how either of their characters, Dr. Arizona Robbins (Capshaw) and Dr. April Kepner (Drew), will be written out.
“The characters of Arizona and April are permanently woven into the fabric of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ thanks to the extraordinary work of Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew,” showrunner Krista Vernoff said in a statement. “As writers, our job is to follow the stories where they want to go and sometimes that means saying goodbye to characters we love. It has been a joy and a privilege to work with these phenomenally talented actresses.”
Added creator Shonda Rhimes: “It’s always hard for me to say goodbye to any of my characters. Both Arizona Robbins and April Kepner are not only beloved but iconic — both the LBGTQ and devout Christian communities are underrepresented on TV. I will be forever grateful to both Jessica and Sarah for bringing these characters to life with such vibrant performance and for inspiring women around the globe. They will always be a part of our Shondaland family.”
Capshaw joined “Grey’s” ensemble in a recurring capacity in Season 5 before being promoted to series regular the following year. Drew recurred in Season 6 before signing on as a regular in Season 7. They follow Martin Henderson out the door this season; the actor left in November after two years. Meanwhile, Jason George is heading to the “Grey’s” firefighter spin-off “Station 19,” which premieres March 22.
Capshaw and Drew thanked fans and expressed their sadness at their exits in separate statements on Twitter.

“Greys,” which has had 28 series regulars during its run, hasn’t formally been picked up for a 15th season yet, but it’s widely expected due to its strong ratings and leading lady Ellen Pompeo’s new $20-million, two-year deal.
